Kittens for Company
Anyone who has owned, visited or even seen cat videos would know that cats love to “help.” This trait was not skipped for any of our cats. Our youngest kitties, Baker and Cinnamon Swirl are mine and they spend their time keeping me company when I am inside. (These two are not allowed to go outside.) Whether I am in the kitchen cooking or taking a restroom break, these two are on the spot ready to be given attention.
Baker loves blankets. It’s like his personal Batman signal. I am best since I am his Momma, but if I don’t have a blanket on then there is a chance he will go lay with someone who has one. The moment someone puts a blanket on he darts right over to plop on it. Yesterday a blanket had fallen on the floor, our softest and warmest blanket. Baker planted himself there all day long. I was chopped liver compared to that blanket. I finally put it over the couch so he would come cuddle with me.
We have a nightly routine while I watch television. Pippin lays along my hip under the blanket, Cinnamon lays down by my calf and Baker cuddles up where Cinnamon is; even if that means one of them is falling off the chair. Cinnamon and Baker have the sweetest ritual, they take turns washing each other. Of course, sometimes the other doesn’t want to be washed and then there’s teeth and claws. It usually ends in giving up and just allowing the other to continue washing. I have countless videos of them doing this. My whole family teases me about taking so many videos and photos. “They blinked. Oh they moved. She laid down. Gotta take a new picture.” I’ve always been like this.
Yesterday, the kittens were walking all over my keyboard and notebooks as I was trying to work. Which is adorable, but also frustrating. This morning when I sat down to begin working there they were; ready to help. It was cold, but Cinnamon decided to lay on my cold laptop. It had to be freezing on her toe beans. When she got up, Baker sat on a notebook and put his front paw on the laptop. It still had to be freezing. Momma to the rescue, I laid down my sweater onto the table and wrapped it in a circle. I tapped it to show Baker and as usual it was like he was saying, “That’s for me!”
Cinnamon showed up again a little while later. She looked up at me and meowed. Then she reached up her paws as if she was saying, “Hello, please love me.” I called her up into my lap. She jumped onto the table and laid down on a notebook in front of me looking down at my lap. I tapped my lap and she crawled down. She sat in my lap which of course made me feel special. Then, she laid down and took a nice nap. When she woke up, she got back onto the table and was watching Baker all cozy in the sweater. I spread out the sweater so she could fit too. She went right over and cuddled up with her brother. Later, they had a wash session too.
I rescued Baker from a local animal shelter when he was nine months old. It is usually difficult to place cats after they are out of their kitten phase. He was the most friendly, attentive and talkative cat in the room. Later, I was looking for a friend for him and found someone giving away Cinnamon. She was only nine weeks old. I was a little worried about them getting along at first, since the age gap was so big and the size difference. Cinnamon was not shy at all! She made herself right at home and Baker accepted her. Now they are best friends. I am so lucky to have these two sweet babies in my life.
